Abstinence

The Florida Department of Health in Wakulla County is proud to provide an Abstinence until Marriage program to youth between the ages of 11 – 19 and their parents and guardians.  This program uses the evidenced based curriculum, Choosing the Best, in which has a  primary focus is on abstinence education as well as promoting positive community values and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices for youth.  This program is available to provide services in school based or community based youth development classes/clubs as well as in existing after school groups and faith based organizations.  For the school year 2014-2015, Choosing the Best will be offered to all the 6th grade, 7th grade and 9th grade youth in the Wakulla County Schools.  Additionally, COAST Charter school will receive the program for 6th, 7th and 8th grade.

The program’s main purpose is to provide services to help prevent and reduce the incidence of out of wedlock pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and school dropout occurrences among teenagers.  Additionally, one of the programs goals is to have intensive and long-term abstinence education services and activities, which includes positive youth development activities.   To learn more about this program and/or receive additional information, please contact Donna Daugherty-Branch, at 850-926-0401 x212 or by email at Donna.Branch@flhealth.gov.
